Major Amazon AWS Cloud Outage Disrupts Snapchat, Robinhood, and Multiple Online Services

On October 20, 2025, a large-scale outage hit Amazon Web Services (AWS), one of the world’s leading cloud computing platforms, causing significant disruptions across a variety of popular online services. This event brought to light the critical dependence many digital businesses have on centralized cloud infrastructure.

The outage began in the early morning hours and was traced primarily to technical issues within AWS’s North Virginia data center, specifically relating to DNS resolution problems affecting DynamoDB, a core database service. The breakdown hampered how web addresses are translated into IP addresses, which is essential for internet communication.

As a result, numerous widely used platforms were impacted. Social media and communication apps like Snapchat and Signal suffered interruptions, while gaming services including Roblox and Fortnite faced connectivity issues. Financial applications, such as Robinhood and Venmo, were also significantly affected, alongside other services like Ring doorbell cameras and Alexa smart devices.

The ripple effect was felt beyond entertainment and finance. Government and educational platforms, including online learning tools and tax websites, faced service outages. Streaming services and business collaboration tools like Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom reported widespread difficulties during the disruption.

User reports indicated that access to many applications was unstable or completely unavailable for several hours across regions in North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. Additionally, the outage extended its impact to Amazon’s own internal operations, disrupting warehouse and delivery workflows and affecting third-party vendors relying on the cloud infrastructure.

AWS responded quickly, deploying engineers to address the DNS complications and work toward recovery. Though service restoration began within hours, the resolution process was gradual, with normal operations resuming by late evening, reflecting the intricate nature of cloud service dependencies.

This significant outage highlights the vulnerabilities and potential cascading effects when foundational cloud services encounter failures. It underscores industry concerns about the risks of heavy reliance on a small number of cloud providers and the importance of resilient architecture and contingency planning in digital ecosystems.

While there was no evidence of cyberattacks tied to the failure, cybersecurity experts advise ongoing vigilance. Users are also cautioned against possible phishing attempts or scams that may exploit confusion during such technical incidents.
